Naples, Italy-born George Murcell (Arthur George Hynes Murcell, 30 October 1925 - 3 December 1998) was a British character actor, whose extensive career on film, on stage and in television included the first series of the TV series Supercar, in 1961.
Murcell's portrayal of the villainous Diamond - in the Gerry Anderson-directed 1960 film Crossroads to Crime - made him ideal for voicing Masterspy, the Supercar team's creepily-ardent nemesis. But he also brought a genial bonhomie to the role of Team Black Rock stalwart Professor Popkiss, opposite the more-eccentric Dr. Beaker (voiced by his Crossroads to Crime co-star, David Graham).
He was unable to continue with these (and other guest-characters) roles, however, for Supercar's second series in 1962. Nonetheless, his sharp ear for dialect and penchant for playing decidedly-shady characters of all sorts, turned up repeatedly in his TV-series appearances - including The Avengers, The Saint, Danger Man (aka Secret Agent) and The Champions - and on the big-screen, in The Fall of the Roman Empire, The Heroes of Telemark, The Assassination Bureau and Inside The Third Reich.
He also acted on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and later in his career founded and directed a regional theater of his own in England.
