The Perils Of Penelope is the 12th produced, and the third broadcast, episode of the British television series Thunderbirds.

Plot

Professor Borender, creator of a new rocket fuel from sea water - used to power the Sun Probe on its historic solar flight - has mysteriously disappeared from a monotrain en route from Paris to Anderbad. To find him, British scientist and inventor Sir Jeremy Hodge enlists the assistance of his friend - and fellow International Rescue field agent - Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward.

The two agree to meet in Paris, where Penelope very narrowly escapes drinking a poisoned Pernod - thanks to the sharp eye and keen aim of Parker, in FAB 1 - as they sit in a local cafe. The culprit, who's escaped, leaves behind a matchbook emblazoned with a heraldic crest; and Penelope and Sir Jeremy attempt to identify it in the files of the city's Heraldic Archive. Unknown to them, though, they've been followed - and are locked in the building's basement, as gas is pumped in! Again, Parker utilizes FAB 1's formidable arsenal to break them out safely.

To retrace the missing Borender's steps, they take the same monotrain journey out of Paris - but as it emerges from the Anderbad Tunnel, they too have vanished! -

By now, International Rescue itself has become involved; and as Virgil and Gordon take the Monobrake into the darkened vastness of the tunnel, their missing friends have come face to face with the mastermind behind the mystery: one Dr. Godber, who wants that sea-water-to-rocket-fuel formula and will go to any lengths to obtain it - by tying Penelope to a ladder and lowering her into the path of the oncoming Anderbad Express, to get her companions to talk!

Notes

• The episode's title is an allusion to the silent-film-era serial The Perils of Pauline.
• Sir Jeremy (voiced by Peter Dyneley) delivers one of the best lines in the series: "I say! Open this door, at once! We're British!"
